Travel, Exile, and Recuperation of
Lost Homelands

Presented by the Penn Humanities Forum and the Penn Library.

Tuesday, January 30, 2007
5:30 – 7:00 pm

Rosenwald Gallery, 6th floor, Penn Library
3420 Walnut Street, Penn campus

Event free and open to the public.

Franz Werfel and Kinga Araya, two artists whose political exile occurred fifty years apart, are the subject of this Penn Library exhibition. Werfel, a Prague-born writer fleeing Nazi Germany, settled in a community of artists in California. Kinga Araya, a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Penn Humanities Forum this year, fled communist Poland in 1988 to become a mixed-media artist. Join us for a conversation between curators and Dr. Araya, with videos exploring identity and homeland, displacement and loss, exile and relocation.

Exhibition runs 16 January—13 April 2007.
