Franz Werfel and Kinga Araya, two artists whose political exile
occurred fifty years apart, are the subject of this Penn Library
exhibition. Werfel, a Prague-born writer fleeing Nazi Germany, settled
in a community of artists in California. Kinga Araya, a Mellon Postdoctoral
Fellow at the Penn Humanities Forum this year, fled communist Poland
in 1988 to become a mixed-media artist. Join us for a conversation
between curators and Dr. Araya, with videos exploring identity and
homeland, displacement and loss, exile and relocation.
Exhibition runs 16 January—13
April 2007.
