Digital Humanities Forum

Digital Humanities Forum

The Digital Humanities Forum was a pilot initiative of the Penn Humanities Forum from 2012 to 2015. The initiative provided project support to Penn faculty, offered funding and training opportunities to Penn faculty and students, and hosted workshops and events for both Penn and the public. The initiative ended in 2015 when a gift from Michael and Vikki Price established the Price Lab for Digital Humanities.

From online preservation and digital mapping to data mining and geographic information systems, new techniques are reshaping the study and teaching of humanities disciplines, turning once solitary practices into team-based endeavors, and enabling global communities of experts to work across old lines of division. The Digital Humanities Forum is the main hub for such efforts at Penn.

Events showcase the best new work in the humanities involving digital materials and computational tools. And funding opportunities offer faculty and students opportunities to develop innovative research. Our goals are to foster interest, awareness, and debate about how computer technologies are affecting scholarship and teaching in the humanities, and to build a collaborative network of humanists and technology specialists at Penn.

We welcome inquiries and proposals from faculty, students, and working groups in all humanistic disciplines as well those outside the traditional humanities interested in forming new interdisciplinary partnerships.

DH Training Grants

The Digital Humanitites Forum's training grants provide up to $1200 to help offset tuition, travel, and lodging to attend classes at any established program or training institute in digital humanities. These intensive 3-5 day summer programs on advanced technologies in humanities research are a great way for novices to gain knowledge and certification in digital humanities, and for more seasoned researchers to broaden their expertise. Doctoral students in particular are finding that DH training can be an asset on the academic job market, as well as an enhancement to their research. Applications are no longer being accepted.

DH Project incubation

The Digital Humanities Forum provides support for digital humanities projects in the early stages of development, assisting faculty to structure their projects soundly, estimate project costs and duration, identify existing digital tools and resources, coordinate with librarians and technology specialists on campus, and prepare effective grant proposals. Visit our DHF Funded Projects page for details on projects at Penn that we have funded. Applications are no longer being accepted.
